How to get players on your Roblox game
Roblox game not getting players? What Roblox’s discovery docs rank, the thumbnail and retention fixes, and the channels that bring first players, with costs.
Updated ·
In short
- Check eligibility first: a game with only the default thumbnail gets no Home recommendation impressions at all, and the Creator Dashboard shows a banner if Roblox has reduced a game’s exposure.
- Roblox ranks Home recommendations on what players do after finding the game: play-through rate, first-session bounce (under 60 and 61–180 seconds), days played (day 1, 2–7, 8–28) and playtime.
- Thumbnails are the cheapest lever: 16:9 at 1,920 × 1,080, and two or more active thumbnails switch on personalisation, which raised qualified play-through rate 8.5% on average in Roblox’s testing.
- The first players have to come from outside Home: your own clips, Discord, sponsored ads, creators or a clipping campaign. Only players from Recommended for You count in its ranking, so those channels start the loop rather than replace it.
- Give each channel its own Roblox Share Link so you can see which one sent players who stayed.
Why is my Roblox game not getting players?
Four checks, in order, all from Roblox’s discovery docs:
- Thumbnail: a custom thumbnail is required for Home recommendation impressions. With only the default one, the game is not eligible.
- Exposure banner: the Creator Dashboard shows a banner, updated daily, on games whose exposure Roblox has reduced. The causes it lists: titles that lead with giveaways, metadata that does not match the gameplay, and games that closely resemble existing ones.
- Source of players: Analytics, Acquisition shows new and returning users by source (recommendations, search, sponsored ads and others), so you can see which one fell.
- Seasonality: Roblox names weekly peaks on Saturday, summer and back-to-school, and holidays as reasons Home traffic moves without any change to the game.

What does Roblox rank when it recommends games?
Recommended for You on Home ranks games on the behaviour of players who found them there. The four signals Roblox marks most important: play-through rate after seeing the game, first-play bounce rate (under 60 seconds and 61 to 180 seconds, counted against you), play days per user (day 1, days 2 to 7, days 8 to 28) and playtime per user (up to 60 minutes a day). Co-play with friends, qualified sessions and spending follow. They are averages per user, so a small game is not ranked down for its size. The why games fail guide has the full table.
In practice: the first minute decides the bounce rate, and a reason to return on day 2 and day 8 decides play days. Those are game-design fixes, and no channel below replaces them.
What should the thumbnails and listing do?
- Size: thumbnails at 16:9, ideally 1,920 × 1,080, under 3 MB. The details page takes up to 10 images or videos.
- Personalisation: activate two or more thumbnails and Roblox shows each user the one most likely to get them playing. In Roblox’s testing games gained 8.5% in qualified play-through rate on average, some 50%. Roblox advises keeping several active rather than picking one winner.
- Accuracy: every thumbnail and the title must show what the game is. Mismatched metadata is not recommended and ranks lower in search.
- Originality: Roblox asks for original imagery and naming, and your own spin on a trend in the title, images, description and the game itself.

Do updates bring players back?
Roblox describes an “explore and expand” pattern: a content update can bring a spike of new users from recommendations, and if that group engages, Roblox keeps recommending the game to more groups like it. Experience events tell players about an upcoming event and notify those who opt in, with up to 5 thumbnails per event. Each update is also footage for clips and a reason for creators to post.
Where do the first players come from?
Roblox lists sponsored ads, curation, search, charts, friends, notifications and social media sharing as signals that can “accelerate your consideration” for Recommended for You. What each channel costs:
| Channel | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Your own clips | Free | Short gameplay moments on TikTok and Shorts; shows which moments get watched before you pay anyone. |
| Discord server and Roblox group | Free | Keeps the players you win reachable. See the Discord guide. |
| Sponsored ads | Auction; you set a daily or lifetime budget. No published price. | Ads Manager bills a card in USD or spends ad credits; first-time card users are charged $5 at submission towards the first bill. |
| A creator, flat fee | Roblox creators on Collabstr listed $50 (two UGC videos) to $450 (one TikTok video) | Listings: one, two, checked October 2026. See the YouTuber guide. |
| Clipping campaign | From $150 on MetaClip; live campaigns paid $0.25 to $2 per 1,000 verified views on 22 October 2026 | Many creators clip the game; you pay only for verified views of clips you approve. See how campaigns work. |
| Standout Games curation | Free; nomination survey | Roblox’s curated sort for novel games; status open on 22 October 2026. |
The budget guide splits these by how much you have, and the cost guide covers what Roblox ads bill.
How do you know which channel worked?
- Share Links: unique, trackable links per channel, with no limit per game. Analytics show how many new users arrived through each link and which channel brought the most engaged ones, so a creator, a campaign and a Discord post each get their own. See Roblox share links.
- Ads attribution: a new player who joins through an ad is credited to it for 30 days of plays and Robux spend (Ads Manager docs).
- Creator Rewards: Roblox’s Audience Expansion Reward pays the game 35% of the first $100 in Robux purchases by new or returning players who arrive through a direct link or by searching its name, for games averaging 100 daily users over the 60-day holding period (Roblox DevForum). Off-platform channels can earn the game money as well as players.
Questions, answered
Why is my Roblox game not getting any players?
Start with eligibility: a default-only thumbnail makes a game ineligible for Home recommendations, and the Creator Dashboard shows a banner if exposure has been reduced for giveaway titles, mismatched metadata or copied games. If it is eligible, it usually has no first players for Roblox to measure, or players leave inside 60 seconds, which Roblox counts against it.
How do I get my first players on Roblox for free?
Post short gameplay clips on TikTok and YouTube Shorts, run a Discord server and a Roblox group, nominate the game for Standout Games if it is novel, and ship updates that give people a reason to share it. Put a Share Link on each so you can see which one worked.
Do Roblox ads get players?
They send plays, and Roblox describes the Plays goal as a way to get initial traffic that helps a game qualify for Recommended for You. Players from ads are not counted in the ranking stage of Recommended for You, though, so ads start the loop and retention decides whether it continues. Roblox publishes no price per play; it is an auction.
How many thumbnails should a Roblox game have?
At least two active, 16:9 at 1,920 × 1,080. With two or more, Roblox’s thumbnail personalisation shows each user the one most likely to get them playing; in Roblox’s testing it raised qualified play-through rate by 8.5% on average and up to 50% for some games.
Is it worth paying creators to get players?
It depends on what the players do after they arrive. Pay per verified view (MetaClip campaigns start at $150) or a flat fee to one creator, give each a Share Link, and compare how many new players stayed, not just how many came.
