Why do 99% of Roblox games fail?

Roblox publishes no failure rate. What it does publish: millions of games, a $1,575 median DevEx payout, and a Home feed that ranks games on retention.

Updated ·

In short

  • “99%” is a saying, not a statistic: Roblox publishes no failure rate. What it publishes is that there are millions of games, 24,500+ creators in its DevEx cash-out program (2024), and a median DevEx payout of $1,575 for 2024.
  • Earnings concentrate at the top: the top 10 developers averaged $33.9 million in 2024, and the top 10 games took about 20% of all hours played in Q2 2026.
  • Roblox’s Home feed ranks games on what players do after finding them: play-through rate, first-session bounce, days played and playtime, per user. A game nobody starts produces none of those signals.
  • Roblox says ads, search, friends and social media sharing can get a game considered for recommendations, but only players who came from Recommended for You count towards its ranking. The first players have to come from somewhere else.
  • The fix is distribution plus retention: your own clips and Discord, sponsored ads, creators, and per-view clipping campaigns (MetaClip from $150), then a first session worth staying for.

Is it really 99%? What Roblox publishes

No Roblox document gives a failure rate. These are the figures it does publish, read on 22 October 2026. The RDC 2026 rows are Roblox’s conference figures as reported by Dexerto; Roblox’s own release of them was not found.

Millions of games against tens of thousands of creators in DevEx, with a median DevEx payout around $1,500 a year, is the measured shape behind the saying. The DevEx figures are measured in Robux spent, per the report’s footnote.

What does Roblox’s Home feed rank?

Home’s Recommended for You sort works in two stages. Retrieval picks a set of games each user might enjoy from signals such as engagement, retention and monetisation. Ranking then orders them, and Roblox states that how far a game goes “depends entirely on the engagement and retention of users who come to your game through Recommended for You”. The signals, in Roblox’s priority order:

SignalPriorityWhat it measures
Play through rateMost importantHow often people play after seeing the game in Recommended for You.
First play bounce rateMost importantHow often people leave after a short first session (under 60 seconds, 61–180 seconds). A negative signal.
Play days per userMost importantUnique days played: day 1, days 2–7, days 8–28.
Playtime per userMost importantAverage time played, counted up to 60 minutes per user per day.
Intentional co-play daysImportantDays users come back to play with friends.
Qualified play sessionsImportantMeaningful sessions from Home, with accidental clicks filtered out.
Spend days and Robux spent per userImportantDays users spend Robux, and how much.

The signals are averages per user, so a small game is not ranked down for being small. Since April 2026 the feed looks at a 28-day window instead of 7 days, and Roblox’s Q2 letter says it “intentionally provides more impressions for highly retentive games”. Why do most Roblox games stall?

  1. No first players, so no signal. Ranking only counts players who arrived from Recommended for You. Roblox says ads, search, friends and social sharing “can accelerate your consideration”, and that even a small number of players can signal a game is worth showing to more. A game nobody plays never enters that loop.
  2. Players leave in the first minute. First play bounce rate under 60 seconds and at 61 to 180 seconds is one of the four most important signals, and it counts against the game.
  3. No reason to come back. Play days are measured on day 1, days 2 to 7 and days 8 to 28. A game that is finished in one session scores on the first and nothing after.
  4. The listing disqualifies it. A game with only the default thumbnail is not eligible for Home recommendations. Titles that lead with giveaways, metadata that does not match the gameplay, and copies of existing games are not prioritised.
  5. Something else holds players better. Roblox lists it as one of the four factors behind Home impressions: a game’s distribution can fall when other games engage players more, even if its own signals hold.

Is it the game or the distribution?

Both, in that order of discovery. Distribution decides whether a game is measured at all; retention decides how far it goes once it is. A good game with no first players is never tested; a game that gets players and loses them in a minute is tested and stopped. Roblox’s own example: a game with 10,000 daily players from Home adds 5,000 from ads and keeps its Home traffic as long as the Home players behave the same. Ads add players; they do not buy ranking.

Where do the first players come from?

  • Your own clips and community: short gameplay clips on TikTok and Shorts, a Discord server and a Roblox group. Free, slow. The Discord guide covers the server side.
  • Sponsored ads: Roblox’s Ads Manager “Plays” goal is built to send initial traffic that helps “qualify your game for Recommended For You”. It is an auction with no published price; the cost guide has what Roblox does publish.
  • Creators: a YouTuber or TikToker playing the game for a flat fee. The YouTuber guide covers finding and paying them.
  • Clipping campaigns: many creators post short clips of the game and you pay per 1,000 verified views. On MetaClip campaigns start at $150; the campaign guide walks through one.
  • Curation: Roblox’s Standout Games sort features novel games picked by its curation team; nominations are open.

The players guide turns this into a checklist, and the channel guide compares all seven channels on cost.

Questions, answered

Why do 99% of Roblox devs fail?

Roblox publishes no failure rate, so “99%” is not a measured figure. The published part: millions of games, 24,500+ creators in DevEx in 2024 and a median DevEx payout of $1,575. Most games never get enough first players for Roblox’s recommendations to measure, or lose them in the first minutes, because Home ranks games on per-user retention and engagement.

What percentage of Roblox games are successful?

Roblox does not publish one. Set millions of games against 42,000+ creators in DevEx (reported from RDC 2026 for the year to June 2026) and the share of games whose creators cash out at all is small; the exact figure is not public.

How much does the average Roblox developer make?

The median DevEx participant received $1,575 in the 12 months to 31 December 2024, per Roblox’s economic impact report; RDC 2026 coverage put it at about $1,500 for the year to June 2026. The top 1,000 developers averaged $820,000 in 2024. Developers who never reach DevEx are not in these figures.

Does Roblox’s algorithm favour big games?

Roblox says no: its recommendation signals are averages per user, not totals, so a small game with engaged players is not disadvantaged. The catch is that a game needs players arriving from Recommended for You before those averages exist.

How do I stop my Roblox game from failing?

Get the first players from outside Home (your own clips, Discord, ads, creators, clipping campaigns), then work on the signals Roblox ranks: fewer players leaving in the first 60 seconds, more coming back on days 2 to 28, and a custom thumbnail that matches the game.
